Craft and Style: Let’s talk a little about the nuts and bolts of writing well
What makes good writing?
We all know it when we read it, but it can be elusive. What makes an author’s voice resonate? When do certain words or turns of phrase pull us out of a book? What about “show, don’t tell,” “overwriting,” use of adjectives, tone, pacing, dialogue, exposition, and so on and so forth? Why is sometimes finding just the right word so important?
NYT bestselling editor, ghostwriter, and coach, Rick Killian, will lead a discussion on the “sentence gymnastics” he performs every day to help authors get their best stuff onto the page in ways that will not only best represent them, but, hopefully, make their style part of what captivates readers. Sure, it’s more like “guidelines” than “rules,” but the more you play at it, the better your writing will get and the more you will find your voice as an author.
So, if you are brave, contact me with any pieces we might look at or bring a favorite section of a book we can discuss. (If you have something, please contact me ahead of time so that we can work it in? Thanks!)
This should be more workshop than presentation, so come ready for a little debate and hopefully some laughter as well.
(Note, parking is free for the first 1.5 hours and after 7:00 pm. So if you show up after 5:30, all you have to do is put in your license plate number and you are good until we’re done. 😁 )
