Boulder BookClub For Writers: Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine, Gail Honeyman

October 6 @ 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

October’s book is Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman (2017)
Sunday, 4pm (for 2 hours), Arapahoe Room at Main Boulder Library

What does it feel like to be the social outcast: the misfit, the office joke? To be so lonely that a completely fine weekend is two liters of vodka, spread out so evenly as to be rendered neither drunk nor sober? Welcome to the inside of Eleanor Oliphant’s head. She’s exceptionally smart, overly judgmental, and completely and utterly alone. Except for Mummy, that is, who’s not much help at all. Finally! A book that cannot be made into a movie, except that Reese Witherspoon is doing just that, blithely ignoring major plot points.

Each meeting we will pick apart a recent novel from various genres with the goal of uncovering how the author has utilized their skills to great effect. Storytelling is an art, but it’s not a mystery. Every writer must address the following:

– Structure, Timeline, Pacing, Suspense, Omission
– Point of View, including Voice, Character, Place
– Tense, Argot, Imagery, Metaphor, Symbols
– Motivation: Making a story pop – generating a thrill
– Why this story? And why now? Industry considerations

We ask that all attendees read the novel in advance of the meeting, and come bearing their discoveries of how the author has addressed each of the five points above.
