Boulder Book Club For Writers – The House Of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea

December 1 @ 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

December’s book is The House Of Broken Angels by Luis Alberto Urrea (2018)
Sunday, 4pm (for 2 hours), Arapahoe Room at Main Boulder Library

Big Angel is going to die. His doctor didn’t lie, and, frankly, he feels it in his bones. Thank god his mother passed before he did, and just before his final birthday, too. So convenient that his many relatives can squeeze a funeral and his party into a single trip. The many colors and flavors of a real family make Big Angel’s saga come alive in all its Mexican-American glory. What is it like to be a family of immigrants in our current Republican hell? This insightful book offers us a glimpse.

Each meeting we will pick apart a recent novel from various genres with the goal of uncovering how the author has utilized their skills to great effect. Storytelling is an art, but it’s not a mystery. Every writer must address the following:

– Structure, Timeline, Pacing, Suspense, Omission
– Point of View, including Voice, Character, Place
– Tense, Argot, Imagery, Metaphor, Symbols
– Motivation: Making a story pop – generating a thrill
– Why this story? And why now? Industry considerations

We ask that all attendees read the novel in advance of the meeting, and come bearing their discoveries of how the author has addressed each of the five points above.
