Boulder Book Club For Writers – American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson
November 3 @ 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
November’s book is American Spy by Lauren Wilkinson (2019)
Sunday, 4pm (for 2 hours), Arapahoe Room at Main Boulder Library
What’s revolutionary? Literacy? Healthcare? Women’s rights? Racial justice? Working within the system or overthrowing it? Marie is severely underutilized by the FBI, but she’s sharp and has skills that might prove useful in Burkina Faso. In this tale of deceit about professional deceivers, Marie tries to lay out the facts to her sons about what really went down back in the 80s. Yet you can’t grasp the full story until the last page. Overtones of Le Carré–yes, it’s that good.
Each meeting we will pick apart a recent novel from various genres with the goal of uncovering how the author has utilized their skills to great effect. Storytelling is an art, but it’s not a mystery. Every writer must address the following:
– Structure, Timeline, Pacing, Suspense, Omission
– Point of View, including Voice, Character, Place
– Tense, Argot, Imagery, Metaphor, Symbols
– Motivation: Making a story pop – generating a thrill
– Why this story? And why now? Industry considerations
We ask that all attendees read the novel in advance of the meeting, and come bearing their discoveries of how the author has addressed each of the five points above.
