Job Description

American Humane Association is looking for a dedicated, self-motivated Editor/Writer at American Humane Associations’ office in Englewood, CO. Responsible for writing copy, editing and proofreading for print and electronic publication in magazines, trade journals, newsletters, annual reports, periodicals, brochures, ads, emails, presentations, website and other informational and promotional materials produced by American Humane Association. Position is approximately 70% editing/proofreading, 30% writing. Responsibilities: (Any one position may not include all the duties listed, and the examples do not cover all the duties that may be performed.) • Writes, edits and/or proofreads all types of printed and electronic materials, including but not limited to: articles, website content, newsletters and e-newsletters, email blasts, press releases, brochures, fliers, advertisements, correspondence, publications, movie reviews, annual reports, white papers, conference programs, training materials, displays, posters, direct mail, briefings, speeches, presentations, blogs, social networking postings, and op-eds. • Serves as the primary MarCom copywriter/editor supporting all programs • Coordinates the production and publishing of publications and collateral materials with the MarCom design team. • Assists program staff in determining content for publications, establishes writing assignments, negotiates deadlines, writes articles and edits all material, working closely with other members of the MarCom team throughout the design and production process. • Writes and edits in accordance with American Humane Association style guide, the Associated Press Stylebook and the Publications Manual of the American Psychological Association, as appropriate. • Participates in regular meetings to determine needs for new content and updates. • Assures consistency and appropriateness of terminology, voice and messaging throughout all American Humane Association publications and communications. • Works with program staff to plan content of publications. • Works with Philanthropic Services staff regarding content for emails, web content and direct-mail pieces. • Edits articles assigned to other staff writers, guest editors/writers and freelancers. • Edits and proofreads content for publications, including printer proofs, as the “final set of eyes” to ensure accuracy and quality. • May occasionally travel to other American Humane Association offices, as well as to conferences and Animal Emergency Services deployment sites, as requested. Other Duties/Responsibilities: • Maintains professional relationships with American Humane Association and other industry experts to help gather needed information to successfully complete written pieces as assigned. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements or Experience

Requirements: • Excellent skills in copywriting, editing and proofreading a variety of content for a variety of audiences. • Clear understanding of the stylistic differences between writing for the web/email and writing for printed media and the ability to reflect that knowledge in his or her writing and editing. • Detail oriented, self-motivated and able to handle and prioritize multiple tasks. • Expertise in spelling, punctuation, and grammar, and familiarity with the style guides used. • Knowledge of publication, layout, design, and production techniques used in a variety of media. • Knowledge of printing techniques as used in desktop publishing and the commercial printing industry. • Knowledge of desktop publishing methods and associated software. • Knowledge of office practices and procedures. • Knowledge of a variety of software systems and their appropriateness to American Humane Association operations. • Knowledge of American Humane Association activities, practices and procedures. • Skill in the use of computer programs such as MS Word, MS Outlook, MS PowerPoint and other software, including accurate and efficient typing skills. • Develop content for presentations. • Work effectively in a team environment. • Compose a variety of correspondence. • Organize and prioritize tasks. • Work under minimal direction. • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. • Establish good rapport with vendors and other employees. • Understand and follow written and oral instructions. • Work on more than one task at a time. • Operate the equipment listed below. • Work effectively under pressure to meet tight, sometimes multiple deadlines. • Accurately proofread a variety of documents and pay close attention to detail. • A bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or Journalism, or the equivalent combination of training and experience. • Three or more years of progressively responsible and varied experience in professional marketing copywriting or editorial-related work. Other marketing experience is highly desirable. Prior experience in a not-for-profit setting is preferred.
